Jazz & Latin Open Mic Night

The Jazz open mic night is held on Mondays, at the World Bar, in Kings Cross - 7.00 - 10.30. Singers and instrumentalists are encouraged to participate.

The World Bar is located at 24 Bayswater Rd Sydney’s Kings Cross. It is a historic 4 storey Victorian terrace house and home to countless legends, curiosities, and varied debauchery over the last century.

           
In the 1940’s the grand old building was an extravagant whore-house, in the 80’s an infamous artist’s squat, and today it stands transformed as Sydney’s most unique bar and nightclub experience – that preferred palace of perennial partying, The World Bar

                    

The World Bar is a two minute walk from Kings Cross Station. There is an extensive beer, wine and cocktail options, as well and delicious pizzas are available.

We have a piano and PA, so to participate singers must bring at least three copies of a well constrcted chord chart in their key. A chord chart looks like this >> sample chord chart and is not to be confused with sheet music.

        

There is a phone app which contains the Jazz Real Book charts, which can be transposed to any key, see >>irealb. This provides a very affordable way to generate excellent charts in the right key.

If you have sheet music in your key and are not sure how to read the key, check this>> key signatures chart. The key signature in the top left at the beginning of the peice will indicate the key by the number of flats or sharps - just match what is on your music to the key in major key column and you will have it.

Mark Gordon from Club Jazz can generate a chord chart and email it to participants, as long as the request is recieved in time.

Musicians are welcome to bring their instruments, and charts in their key for solos if they wish. Just introduce yourself to Mark Gordon from Club Jazz and you will be put on a playlist. Generally singers can perform two or three songs, but the list will simply be organized around the number and type of performers.



Instrumentalists can perform solos during sung peices or may be able to sit in with the band.

* note that the open mic doesn't suit bands, choirs or singer songwriters, as participants are mainly individual singers, and some instrumentalists. Pieces are mainly jazz and latin standards, well known by the house band.
